Applying GRA in the Evaluation of Blended Learning Reading Comprehension

Summary: The purpose of this paper was to evaluate theeffectiveness of integrating computer assisted learning(CALL) on college freshmen’s English readingcomprehension development. High-proficiency andlow-proficiency and two groups of college freshmen fromChienkuo Technology University were used in the study.Each group comprised 50 students (100 in all, 50 males and50 females), and was conducted for 18 weeks. A pre-testwas administrated at the beginning of the study and apost-test immediately after its completion. The studyevaluated student performance using scores on individualsemester tests (pre-test and post-test). In addition, aquestionnaire was developed to assist in the study. Theresearch method applied Grey Relational Analysis toanalyze the assembled data and decide on an effectivenessrating. The major findings of the study were: Wherestudents used computer-assisted learning in readingproficiency building their test results was generallybetter. Low-proficiency students benefit more from CALLblended learning than high-proficiency students. Allstudents develop better reading comprehension proficiency,broader vocabulary volume and more relaxed learningatmosphere. Looking at gender, female students benefittedmore than male students. The study also came up withsome suggestions for further research in the future.
